As part of its India expansion plans, the Redmi 2 Prime is the first smartphone to be manufactured in the country by the Chinese smartphone maker.

New Delhi: Xiaomi has launched its first ever made in India smartphone, the Redmi 2 Prime, today in Visakhapatnam.

As part of its India expansion plans, the Redmi 2 Prime is the first smartphone to be manufactured in the country by the Chinese smartphone maker.

In a special event, company chief Hugo Barra addressed the media and Mi fans while announcing the new smartphone.

The Redmi 2 Prime comes with a 4.7-inch IPS HD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 410 64-bit chipset combined with 2GB RAM. It comes with an 8 megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture.

The 4G dual-SIM budget smartphone comes with 16 GB internal storage and has been priced at Rs 6,999.

Present at the event, state Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said, "Its a pride to have Xiaomi set up the manufacturing unit here in India."

In tune with Xiaomi's plans, the Redmi 2 Prime is an improved variant of the Redmi 2 that was introduced in India earlier this year for a price of Rs 6,999 and featured 8 GB internal storage and 1 GB RAM.

The company recently slashed the price of the Redmi 2 to make way for the new variant.
