Young people in Japan are having a new type of marital relationship that does not require mutual feelings relating to marriage at all. This kind of relationship does not require mutual love or physical involvement to stay together. This new trend, friendship marriage, is making headlines and gaining attention.

Thousands of people, precisely more than 120 million people in Japan are indulging in this kind of relationship, and the number is growing day by day. It includes people who are asexual individuals, homosexuals, and heterosexuals. With time, people in Japan are refraining from traditional marriage.

An agency called Colorus, specializing in friendship marriage, shared data related to this trend. Since 2015, around 500 people in Japan have indulged in this type of marriage. They have created their household. Refraining from the traditional type of marriage, they are raising children as well.

According to reports, “It is not about traditional romantic love or marrying a best friend.” Couples in this kind of marriage are legally married to each other, yet they choose to refrain from sexual intercourse and romantic relationships. In terms of having children, they choose other artificial ways of getting a child.

In this type of relationship, individuals can be polygamous, and they can have romantic relationships with other people while in this type of relationship. It is mentioned in the mutual agreement as well.

According to the report by Colorus, couples usually spend hours or days agreeing on the details of their lives before getting married. They have discussions on meals, expenses, laundry, and every other aspect of marriage.

Someone who has been in this kind of relationship for three years explained, “Friendship marriage is like finding a roommate with similar interests.” Some, not interested in the traditional type of relationship, said, “I’m not suited to be someone’s girlfriend, but I can be a good friend. I only wanted someone with similar tastes to do things we both enjoy, to chat and laugh with.”

According to data, people who have an income that exceeds the national average income, are choosing friendship and marriage to build a family. Men and women, who are asexual or homosexual usually resort to friendship marriage more. They believe in companionship more than having their physical needs met traditionally.

Zhao Li, a marriage lawyer, beautifully explained friendship marriage with the Chinese saying, “More than friends, less than lovers.”.
