Breaking the glass ceiling, women now dominate their counterparts in every field. Be it the corporate sector, sports, politics or male dominated driving. While the presence of women auto drivers remains low and uncommon, an inspiring video of a woman auto-rickshaw driver is raking in likes. This woman auto rickshaw driver defies traditional gender stereotypes, showcasing buoyancy and determination as she enters a profession once dominated by men.
A social media user and a commuter, Prakriti shared her first-time experience of travelling in an auto rickshaw driven by a woman. The user posted a picture of the auto driver on X (Formerly Twitter). The image quickly gained traction and widespread acclaim. The picture has mustered over 3,46,000 views, so far.
The social media buffs expressed delight and support for the woman. A user shared an experience about the same and wrote, “There is one lady driver at the forum mall in Chennai. Whenever I go with my family, I look out for her. She drives slow and also plays with my daughter.”

Another added, “You must be feeling extra safe!?” and an X user remarked, “The best thing is they don’t drive rashly!!!”
A user recalled, “When I used to go to college in Navi Mumbai, there was a separate queue of autos driven by women. The colours of the autos were different, and all of them were extremely sweet and nice. It made me happy too then.”
Several others echoed similar sentiments, with one mentioning, “There are many women-driven autos and cabs in Bangalore. I love it when I get one when I book.”
Reports suggest, it was in the 1980s when India’s first woman auto driver Shila Dawre made headlines as she shattered gender stereotypes at the age of 18 by driving on Pune roads alongside khaki-clad men auto drivers. Delhi’s presumably first auto driver Sunita Choudhary has devoted the last two decades into this field.
In April 2022, after nearly two decades of having just a lone woman auto-rickshaw driver, Delhi got 500 more women drivers, and also the highest number of electric autos in any state in India, with the government issuing permits to 3,500 e-auto owners, 500 of whom were women, Hindustan Times reported.
