A major appeal of iPhones is their impressive camera quality and a number of advanced features that come with them. It is highly unlikely to get a camera-less iPhone, but now a photo of one such phone is going viral. Earlier this week a Reddit user shared a photo of a smartphone that had the Apple logo but its cameras were missing. It appeared that the whole backside of the phone was plain with just the logo. This photo was captioned, “A camera-less iPhone issued to my buddy that works at a Nuclear Plant. No cameras allowed.” It is important to note that Apple does not offer an iPhone model without cameras.
This post soon raked in over 85,000 upvotes. Interestingly many people who claimed to work at nuclear power plants said that they were allowed to use phones with cameras even though the general rule was not to take any photos. A Reddit user said, “Our people at our plants all carry their regular cell phones. Of course, you’re not allowed to take pictures of sensitive equipment and structures, but other than that, no issues. Might be different at government nuclear facilities.”

Someone else wrote, “You sure your buddy doesn’t do something more clandestine? I’ve got friends who work at our local nuke plant and they all have camera phones.”
People also shared instances where they were asked to submit their phone cameras for privacy reasons. A Reddit user recalled, “I remember the time I had a contract on some military island near the coast of Abu Dhabi we had to hand over all equipment, even computers that had a camera on them.”
Someone also wished that camera-less phones could be normalised and opined, “Wish this would become standard. I’m so sick of people taking pics and videos everywhere all the time instead of just enjoying life. Can we go back to the disposable camera era.”
Back in May 2022, another Reddit post went viral. It showed a man showing how one can buy an iPhone that is customised to be cameraless. The Reddit user described the photo as, “Saw this at a store, iPhone with both cameras removed (custom ofc) thought you guys would like to see this.”
News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the existence of such a device.

On the Apple Discussions forum, a user inquired about purchasing an iPhone without a camera due to restrictions in their husband’s job regarding data protection. They sought advice on acquiring such an iPhone without paying for the advanced cameras and then removing them.
To this, an Apple user replied, “Every iPhone currently has a camera on the front and back. There is no way to buy an iPhone that has no camera. You could disable the Camera app from the iPhone in Restrictions where you can disable features like Camera, FaceTime, Safari (Internet) etc… e.g. if you have a child.”
Meanwhile, there are service providers who offer to disable the phone camera. Singapore-based companies like Mister Mobile and NonCam offer some of these services. The phone cameras can also be made normal as this customisation is reversible. People can also buy special camera-disabled phones from these service providers.
