Shweta Vijay Nair, Miss India Earth 2003 and a popular beauty influencer, with over 1 lakh Instagram followers, recently opened up about her eventful journey and the challenges she faced after winning the crown. In an Instagram post, Nair compared her Miss India victory to “getting the golden ticket to the chocolate factory, but with a twist.” Nair described how she had to navigate through a system that seemed to test her “moral fibre,” recounting a pivotal moment when she was advised to “compromise” or she will be “stuck in minors forever.”
Undeterred, Shweta forged her path, taking on projects independently and finding allies who shared her vision. “We didn’t exactly set the world on fire, but hey, at least we didn’t sell out,” Nair wrote.
She also recounted about the significant personal and professional challenges, including the death of her father, which led her to put her education on hold to support her family. “I took odd jobs to sustain and survive and believe me, no young girl should go through what I did in a job atmosphere that was ridiculously unsafe, sexist and racist in Dubai. Education through correspondence was the only way and it took me forever to complete because of the lack of money,” she added.
Following her Miss India stint, Nair recounted that securing a job became incredibly challenging for her, forcing her to sell her cherished first car. She described the experience as “profoundly heartbreaking.” However, resilient Nair vowed to buy a new car once she was financially stable, a promise fulfilled after 19 years.
Further, Nair described her life in Mumbai a “never-ending game of survival,” marked by frequent moves due to rising rent. “Then, I got married, moved to the U.K., and found myself jobless and clueless, which made me the ultimate dependent spouse – cue marital drama,” she added.
However, with her partner’s unwavering support, Nair started a YouTube channel, which turned into a successful venture. In one Instagram slide, Nair also shared about her IVF journey and the experience of becoming a mother in her late 30s. She lightheartedly described this period as “midlife crisis-turned-success story.”
In her Instagram post, Nair wrote, “Welcome to my TED talk.. I’m putting it all out there! #mylifeinpictures Hope it helps a little .. and if you stayed till the last side .. Thank you for doing so.”
Nair’s post received a variety of reactions from social media users. In the comment section, one user commented, “This is so beautifully put across. We see the highlights of people’s lives and deem ourselves failing! I understand that it isn’t easy to put your struggles out there but so many like me would be feeling a renewed sense of hope after reading this! Thank you Shweta!”
Influencer Chetali Chadha penned, “Your journey truly moved me, Shweta. It’s incredibly relatable and stands as a powerful example of resilience, perseverance, and determination. It’s rare to find someone with such unwavering strength and a balanced moral compass. A TED Talk that undoubtedly deserves a standing ovation. Sending you tight hugs, love, and light always!”
Someone else shared, “I adore you Shweta.. Every single word written here is from your heart and I can feel it! Immensely proud of the person you are and the big heart you have.”
