At times, we wish our parents were wealthy above our means and kept it a secret from us to keep us humble. Well, there is a true case of hidden money that has stunned social media. The Chinese snack brand’s owner’s son said that he was unaware of his family’s fortune until he had his university degree.

The 24-year-old Zhang Zilong claimed to the Chinese media site Jiupai News that for the first 20 years of his life, his multimillionaire father, Zhang Yudong, had misled him about his true financial situation, motivating him to put in a lot of effort and succeed.

Yudong is the creator and president of Mala Prince, a Hunan spicy gluten latiao company that produces items valued at more than 600 million yuan (Rs 691 crores) annually. His son was born the same year the brand was established.

Zilong said to the news outlet that he was raised in Pingjiang County, in the central Chinese region of Hunan, in an “ordinary flat.” Though he knew of his father’s well-known brand, he was informed that his family had incurred debt in order to maintain the business.

He went to one of the top secondary schools in Hunan’s main city, Changsha, without his family taking advantage of their connections to gain admission.

After completing his studies, Zilong had hoped to secure a reliable job paying around 6,000 yuan (more than Rs 60,000) per month, which would enable him to gradually assist his family in paying off their debt.

After graduation, Yudong revealed to his son that the family was actually quite affluent and that they moved to a brand-new home that had cost 10 million yuan (about Rs 11.67 crores).

Following that, Zilong started working at his father’s company’s e-commerce division, where his coworkers treated him just like any other trainee.

He went on to say to the news organisation that neither he nor his father would have wanted him to live like a spoilt fu er dai—a mocking phrase for ‘second-generation rich’ in Chinese. He acknowledges that his wealth is a perk, though.

Zilong stated that his current goal is to assist the business in going public and expanding into foreign markets. According to his father, he would only think about offering him a position if his performance warranted it.

As reported by the South China Morning Post, while some internet users thought the claim was ludicrous, others said they could believe it after witnessing Zilong’s thrifty lifestyle, which included his collection of inexpensive clothing.
