A British couple had to mortgage their house for the life-saving treatment of their cockapoo pup, who got ripped apart in a savage park attack on April 27. The couple has received a medical bill of a staggering amount of £23,000 ( Rs 24 lakh). Lynn Holdom and Alan Bamford are now trying to re-mortgage their house to pay the sum. The couple’s daughter Kayleigh took her cockapoo pup named Ruby for a walk in Sycamore Park, when an unexpected attack for the kill took place by a Jack Russell crossbreed. Horrendous screams were heard from the park as the dog shook and bit her while tearing out Ruby’s intestines and fracturing her back. The pup fought for her life and so the family decided to take her to a veterinary hospital as they could not come to “put her down”. The pup was 16 weeks old.
The Warwickshire Police is currently investigating the alleged attack on a pet by an off-lead dog. “We walk that park every Saturday, there’s lots of children there, lots of dogs; there’s never been a problem. She was walking round the edge of the park and all of a sudden this girl let go of the lead and this dog came running across and just tried to kill her, making Kayleigh’s hand all bleed,” recalled Lynn, while talking to Birmingham Live. After the horrendous screams echoed in the park, the people nearby reached the location to put off the attacker. The couple said that the attacker must have misinterpreted Ruby as a Rabbit and so it came for a kill.
The misery of the couple and dog did not end there. The nearby vets were closed at the time of the day. The nearest open vet was in Solihull which is almost a one-hour drive from the park. Lynn said that Ruby’s tongue was hanging out as she was bleeding. After stabilising her bleeding, she underwent an overnight operation to have everything sewn back in again.
Initially, the hospital bill for the treatment of the dog was 6000 pounds i.e. approximately Rs 6 lakh. When it was found that Ruby’s spine was also broken, the bill doubled. Every day, the admission of Ruby in ICU costs them £300 – £400 ( Rs 30,000-40,000). As a result, the total bill has reached Rs 24 lakh. The couple has started a fund page to meet the expenses.
