Vietnamese Woman's Rendition Of Kareena Kapoor’s Song San Sanana Is Too Good
San Sanana, from the 2001 film Asoka, has recently gone viral for a makeup trend.

The mesmerising song San Sanana from the Bollywood film Asoka is having its trending moment across social media. The song, crooned by Alka Yagnik with sharp lyrics by Guljar, became a hit among makeup enthusiasts who used the song to make a time-lapse tutorial video of ‘Indian Bride Make-up’. Now, a Vietnamese singer, who goes by May Bae, on Instagram has posted a cover of Sun Sanana. She masters the difficult lyrics and tempo of the song in a short video. She shared the cover on her social media handle, where it got over 3.6 lakh likes since she posted it on April 22.

In the comments many people praised her singing, while a number of people also left negative remarks, mostly criticising her accent. In response to the negative comments, she wrote, “Guys chill I’m not saying that I’m good at singing Indian songs, I’m just a normal girl who’s really attracted by India’s culture and music.”

Commenting on her video, an Instagram user wrote, “As an Indian, I am so proud of your pronunciation. I love all of your songs so much, you nailed it, girl. Don’t get affected by some negative comments. No one can decide what you have to do, do what you like.” Another person encouragingly said, “Her dedication to learn this song and sing it pretty well, y’all are hating for no reason.” Someone observed, “This proves that music has no language barrier.” An Instagram user commented on the song’s virality and wrote, “Good at least Indians are getting famous through this song among other countries.”

Asoka, a 2001 film, had Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. It told a fictionalised story of Mauryan ruler Ashoka who ruled in parts of India in the third century BC. In the film, Kareena Kapoor plays Karuvaki, Ashoka’s fourth wife, believed to be his most beloved.

Interestingly, in the song San Sanana, Kareena Kapoor wears a simple white saree with minimal make-up, that only includes a painted bindi and dark eyeliner. Kapoor’s look is in stark contrast with the stereotypical ‘Indian Bride Make-up’ trend that shows brides with colourful make-up supplemented and heavy jewellery.

Talking about the contrast between the two looks, an X user wrote, “I just want one person to do that Asoka transition trend with the actual makeup Kareena had in the film and not Asian bridal because as impressive as it is what is the correlation.”
