An 18-year-old Hungarian snowboarder found himself at the centre of a dramatic collision at the Kreischberg ski resort, in Austria. The young man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was initially seen on video making his way up the hill with a degree of difficulty, hinting at his struggle to maintain control.
As the tow lift reached its zenith, positioned at the steepest point of the snowy hill, disaster struck. The snowboarder lost control, beginning a treacherous descent, and sliding backwards down the slope. What followed was a series of collisions that would leave several skiers injured and in need of medical attention.
Footage captured by a fellow visitor to the resort showed the snowboarder careening down the hill, crashing into unsuspecting skiers with devastating force. The impact sent people and ski equipment flying in all directions, creating a chaotic scene of panic and confusion.
According to local newspaper Kronen Zeitung, four individuals struck by the out-of-control snowboarder required hospital treatment. One of the injured was airlifted to the hospital in Friesach by a rescue helicopter. The exact nature and extent of their injuries have not been disclosed.
In the aftermath of the incident, the snowboarder fled the scene, sparking a search by the Alpine Service of the Murau District Police Command. Despite his attempts to evade capture, the young man was eventually tracked down, leading to questions about the circumstances that led to the collision and the potential legal consequences he may face.
The incident at Kreischberg is not the first time this ski season that Austria has faced ski-related tragedies. In 2022, the Lech Zürs ski resort was rocked by an avalanche that buried 10 skiers. The avalanche, which occurred on Christmas Day, prompted a massive search and rescue operation, according to the Austrian Press Agency.
Rescuers, faced with the daunting task of locating the missing individuals, worked tirelessly, even as darkness fell, using head torches and search dogs to aid their efforts. The search continued throughout the night, with officials vowing to spare no effort in ensuring the safety of all visitors to the resort.
Fortunately, the efforts of the rescue teams paid off, as all 10 missing skiers were found and accounted for by the early hours of the following morning. While four individuals sustained injuries as a result of the avalanche, the fact that all missing persons were recovered provided relief in what could have been a far more tragic outcome.
