Due to science and technology, many things happen in our lives that people would not have imagined say a century ago. For example, flying in the sky was once a fantasy, but today, it is no longer a big deal. People take flights to cover the distance that they used to cover by rickshaw or on foot. Usually, we prefer to travel by aeroplane for long distances.
Today, we are going to talk about the world’s shortest air travel. But the flight we will tell you about covers a distance of just 2.7 kilometres, that too in 1 or 2 minutes. The flight between the Scottish islands of Westray and Papa Westray holds the world record for the shortest commercial flight. The plane is usually in the air for just under 2 minutes. The name of this commercial flight is also recorded in the world record, which ends as soon as it starts.
Papa Westray holds the record for having the shortest flight in the world. This plane is a commercial flight, which starts and ends within just two minutes. Most of us travel by car, bus, or on foot for short trips like the distance of 1.7 miles, i.e., 2.7 kilometres but for those living in the islands of northern Scotland, this distance is covered by aeroplane.
A Britten-Norman Islander, a small aircraft with only eight seats and only one pilot is used to transport passengers. This flight between Orkney Islands and Westray usually takes 90 seconds, but if the weather is not favourable, then it can take 2 or 3 minutes.
This distance can also be covered by ferry from Orkney Islands, but this is not always possible when the water level rises. In such a situation, people take aeroplanes for this short distance. This flight first started in 1967 and has been running like this ever since. For this, the Scottish government has also kept subsidised tickets, which cost around Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,700.
