Maldives Parliament impeaches vice president accused of plotting to kill Yameen
On Wednesday, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen had declared a state of emergency, giving sweeping powers to security forces to arrest suspects ahead of a major anti-government protest rally, his spokesman said.

Male: A day after declaring state of emergency, the Maldives parliament on Thursday impeached the island nation's vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor. The impeachment comes just days after the vice president was arrested for allegedly plotting to kill President Abdulla Yameen.

On Wednesday, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen had declared a state of emergency, giving sweeping powers to security forces to arrest suspects ahead of a major anti-government protest rally, his spokesman said.

"(The) Maldives declares state of emergency for a period of 30 days starting 12 pm (0700 GMT) Wednesday," the presidential spokesman Muaz Ali tweeted.

Yameen had branded his ousted deputy as a threat to national security after his arrest over an alleged attempt to assassinate the President in a speedboat bombing in September.

The vice president's arrest followed a series of sackings of government officials, which have fuelled political unrest and further damaged the Maldives' image as an upmarket tourist destination.
