Kathmandu: Nepal's new Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is likely to visit India soon, the Indian envoy on Tuesday said, a day after the visit of Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa to New Delhi to discus hiccups in ties following the Madhesi-led blockade of main trading points.
Speaking to reporters at the Indian Embassy, India's Ambassador to Nepal Ranjt Rae said that Thapa, during his three-day visit to New Delhi, discussed with Indian leaders the upcoming visit of Oli. Rae, however, said the date of the visit is yet to be finalised.
"The date has not been fixed," Rae said, "however, the invitation from India has been cordially accepted by Nepal." Thapa, who is also the Foreign Minister of Nepal, had held talks with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj, Home Minister Rajnath Singh. He also paid a courtesy call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi, while congratulating Oli upon his becoming the Prime Minister of Nepal, and also extended an invitation for him to visit India, Rae said. The India-Nepal ties have hit a rough patch following the unrest in the southern plains by Madheshi parties demanding more representations in the newly-adopted Constitution.
The protests have halted supplies of goods and fuel to the land-locked country for nearly two months. Nepal accused India of being the blockade of major border trade points. India had categorically dismissed the allegations.
