A family in the US state of New Jersey narrowly dodged disaster when a large chunk of ice, believed to have fallen from an airplane, crashed through the roof of their home on Wednesday.
The Gomez family was relaxing at their backyard table when they heard a sudden, hollow sound followed by a loud crash. “Out of nowhere, you just hear a hollow sound coming down, and honestly, we didn’t think anything of it, and then you just hear a big DOOOOSH,” Sabrina Gomez told News 12 New Jersey.

The impact left a substantial hole in the attic roof, causing significant damage. Paul Gomez said, “It was big stones… I guess it was a big square. When it came down, it smashed everything.” Living directly under several flight paths, the family often witnesses planes overhead.
Sabrina Gomez explained, “When we look up, it’s basically like a plane flying by.” After the ice struck, the family hurried to the front of their house, capturing video of ice scattered across their driveway. Despite the terrifying experience, Sabrina Gomez expressed relief that no one was injured.
“Honestly, it was a little terrifying, but thank God it didn’t hit anybody, and it hit the floor. It hit the roof, thank God,” she shared. The Gomez family has since filed a claim with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate the incident. This event follows a similar incident in Utah earlier this month, where ice falling from an aircraft tragically killed a family’s pet goat.
