Chennai’s IT corridor on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) is set to get a major upgrade.
Construction of 10 elevated metro stations on the OMR IT corridor between Taramani and Sholinganallur has officially started.
This 10km stretch, part of the larger 45.4km Corridor-3 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri Sipcot, is set to be completed by next year.
Workers have begun building the pillars for the new stations, which will be located under the viaduct where the tracks will run. Land is also being acquired for the station entrances and exits.
According to a CMRL official, the project is moving quickly. Out of the 449 pillars needed, 191 have already been built. Additionally, 65 of the 450 ‘U’ girders, which will support the tracks, have been installed. The elevated line will be constructed at a height ranging from 13m to 24m in the center of the road.
“Station construction is expected to begin in June, just before the southwest monsoon starts. We have already completed casting 136 of the 450 ‘U’ girders needed for this stretch,” the official said, as quoted by TOI.
CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique previously announced that the first part of the 116.1km phase-2 will open in 2025, with the final segment set to open in 2028. The IT corridor on OMR will be linked by a 20km elevated line from Taramani Metro to Siruseri Sipcot, divided into two sections.
While construction is ongoing for the Taramani-Sholinganallur section, work on the Sholinganallur-Siruseri Sipcot section has been delayed due to contract issues.
