Construction has begun on Victoria station, a crucial part of the upcoming Joka-Esplanade Metro corridor.
The station, located underground, will be 325 meters long with a platform depth of 14.7 meters below the surface.
The Joka-Esplanade project, spanning 16 kilometers and known as the purple line, is currently operational between Joka and Majerhat. It is being managed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), as reported by Telegraph India.
Starting from Mominpore, the corridor goes underground, with four underground stations planned: Kidderpore, Victoria, Park Street, and Esplanade.
Metro officials stated that construction at Victoria station will involve building diaphragm walls first, followed by station slabs using the cut and cover top-down method. Machinery, including cranes, has been deployed for this purpose.
To facilitate construction, approximately 29 trees identified for removal will be transplanted to Kamardanga near Beliaghata. Mitigating measures, such as vibration-impact studies and health surveys of nearby structures like the Victoria Memorial Hall, have been conducted to address environmental concerns.
However, the purple line project has encountered obstacles. The defense ministry has declined permission for the Metro Railway to relocate a market to make way for the proposed Esplanade station, which would serve as the corridor’s terminal station.
Metro officials have confirmed that discussions to resolve this issue are ongoing, but no breakthrough has been achieved yet.
