Omar Abdullah, former CM of Jammu & Kashmir and an avid automobile enthusiast has handed out an important road safety message, but with a twist! Setting aside the political differences, Omar Abdullah has tweeted pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is seen wearing a seatbelt on the front seat of his Range Rover SUV.
Omar Abdullah tweeted the pictures saying “To those who think they are too important (or too cool) to use a seat belt in the front seat. Even the PM uses one & he doesn’t do it out of fear of traffic police." Not only Omar Abdullah has given an important road safety message, he has made sure that nobody can ignore it, considering the popularity of PM Modi.

It may sound a bit frivolous to many, but Mr. Abdullah’s tweet holds a deep message in many levels. Firstly, India is one of the most unsafe country, as far as fatal accidents are concerned. According to the Government data, 1 out of 3 people involved in a road accident in India die. A total of 4,80,652 (as per Ministry of Road, transport & Highway, 2016 data) people were involved in road accidents and out of these, 1,50,785 died.
Also, people in India wear seat-belts and helmets out of fear of police and not out of safety perception. Mr. Abdullah’s tweet points out the very basic element of wearing seat-belts – it’s not for cops, but for your own safety. And if India’s most powerful person such as PM Modi can wear it, what’s stopping the rest of the country to follow his footsteps.
Our sincere gratitude to Mr. Omar Abdullah for bringing out this evil out of the box. Also, a big thanks to PM Modi for setting the right example here.
