Tata Motors have launched their much anticipated sub-4 metre compact sedan Tigor at a starting price tag of Rs 4.7 Lakh for the petrol variant and Rs 5.60 Lakh for the diesel variant (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Tigor is the third offering by Tata Motors in this segment after the Indigo eCS and the Zest and as we found out in our review, it is their best one yet. Hence, it is only natural to see how it fares against the segment leader – the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.
We bring you a comparison of the two based on their specifications.
Being a sub-4 metre compact sedan offering, both these cars are expected to deliver a bit more space as compared to their hatchback sibling.
In terms of dimensions of the two, the Swift DZire measures at 3995x1695x1555mm (LxWxH) whereas the Tigor measures at 3992x1677x1597mm. This means that the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is longer, wider and taller than the Tigor but surprisingly when it comes to the boot space, the Tigor takes the lead with 419 litres of capacity as compared to 320 litre boot space capacity of the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.
When it comes to the wheel size, then the Tigor comes with two offerings – 15-inch wheels for the top-end petrol variant and 14-inch wheels for the diesel engine powered variant. The DZire comes with 15-inch wheels for both petrol and diesel variants.
On the outside, the biggest difference is that the Tigor gets projector headlamps and split-LED tail lamps whereas the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire comes with conventional headlights and tail lights.
When it comes to the mechanical configurations of the two cars then, then both have diesel and petrol powered offerings.
The Tigor comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that delivers 84 bhp and 114 Nm of torque and the 1.05-litre diesel engine pushes out 70 bhp and 140 Nm of torque.
The DZire’s 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers 83 bhp and 115 Nm of torque and the 1.3-litre diesel engine delivers 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque.
If we pit these numbers against each other, the Maruti Suzuki Swoft DZire comes out with a better performance figures than the Tigor.
When it comes to transmission, the DZire also offers an optional 5-speed AMT gearbox for the diesel variant along with the 5-speed manual transmission options for both the engines. The Tigor, in comparison, only offers 5-speed manual for both petrol and diesel engine powered variants and misses out on an AMT gearbox
Where the Tigor claims lost ground is when it comes to the list of features on board. The interiors of the Tigor get body coloured accents, electric power steering, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors and all four power windows. There’s also steering mounted controls and the instrument cluster incorporates the multi-function TFT screen. The driver side seat and the steering is height adjustable too. The biggest attraction, though, is the touchscreen ConnectNext infotainment system that comes connected to an 8-speaker setup developed with Harman Kardon and supports AUX, USB, Bluetooth telephony and audio streaming, Navigation, SD card support, a 6-app suite that works in tandem to your smartphone and voice command recognition controls.
The Swift Dzire comes with a dual-tone interior design that have wooden accents in the top-end variant. Inside this cabin, there is automatic climate control, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, all four power windows and steering mounted controls. The twin-pod instrument cluster incorporates a multi-function display between the two dials. It gets a 2-Din audio system with USB and AUX support along with Bluetooth telephony and audio streaming.
In terms of safety, both the offerings get ABS and dual front airbags as well.
