Volvo, in a virtual reveal, unveiled the C40 Recharge on Tuesday and with it moved a step closer to its aggressive and ambitious strategy to push towards 100 percent full electric vehicles by the end of the decade. The Swedish automaker in statement last year had said that the pandemic will not stand in its way of electric transition and it looks like with the launch of the C40 it means business.
The C40 will be the company's second fully electric offering and it joins Volvo’s EV stable after the recently released XC 40 Recharge. The C40 Recharge is based on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform as the XC 40 Recharge. However, it will be the first Volvo model to be designed as a pure EV.
In addition to sharing the same EV architecture platform as the XC40 Recharge, the C40’s front remains almost identical. Nevertheless, the new EV will be the first Volvo to sport headlights with its state-of-the-art pixel technology, which is aimed at diminishing glare from oncoming vehicles. Also, among others it will be the first Volvo vehicle to be completely free of leather!
Body design of the C40 differs from the XC40 thanks to a lower roofline and in the rear end, it has a slanted rear hatch. It even sports a rear spoiler and few sharper lines to improve efficiency.
The C40’s powertrain features twin motors that provide all-wheel-drive. It also has a slightly larger battery pack 78kWh, while its SUV stablemate the XC40 has a 75kWh unit. It is also reported to have a range of 420 kilometres (approx. 261 miles according to WLTP rating).
Although Volvo did not divulge power output figures, it should be in the same 400-horsepower ballpark as the XC40 Recharge. The company said using a DC fast charger, the C40 Recharge can go from empty to 80 percent battery charge in 40 to 45 minutes.Moving to the interiors of the car, the C40 borrows heavily from the XC40 Recharge’s minimal and loved features. Some of the features include standard features like the infotainment system jointly developed with Google. It also provides its customers with an array of Google products like Google Assistant, Maps and Play Store among others.
Volvo didn't mention how much it costs but made it amply clear in the media session said, the sales of its EVs, starting with the XC40, will be online only.
