Bengaluru’s notorious private commute scene has been a hot topic of discussion, with concerns lingering among its residents. Recently, a resident shed light on the exorbitant charges of booking an Uber past midnight from the airport to HSR Layout, prompting some to humorously compare it to ‘breaking a fixed deposit’.
Taking his frustration to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Rajesh Bhattad shared a snapshot revealing Uber’s jaw-dropping nearly Rs. 2,000 fare for a journey spanning from Kempegowda International Airport to the southeastern Bengaluru suburb, HSR Layout, covering approximately 53 kilometres via NH 44 (as per Google’s route). “The Uber pricing past midnight from Bengaluru Airport to HSR,” captioned Mr. Bhattad, accompanied by a ‘smiling through the pain’ emoji. He even tipped his hat to BMTC (Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation), opting for a bus ride home, which would cost him a mere Rs. 270 to Rs. 340, in contrast to the ‘sky-high’ cab fare.

Interestingly, the screenshot captured the post-midnight scenario, where cab services typically slap on a night-time charge or activate surge pricing. It revealed that an Uber Go trip home would dent Mr. Bhattad’s wallet by Rs. 1,931, while Uber Go Sedan and Uber Premier weren’t far behind at Rs. 1,846. The price skyrocketed to Rs. 2,495 for an Uber XL. Normally, a ride between the airport and the HSR layout falls within the range of Rs. 1200 to Rs. 1500.

Nevertheless, the post set tongues wagging, drawing a flurry of responses and suggestions from the public. While many rallied behind the BMTC bus alternative, Mr. Bhattad confessed, “Yep. I took the same. 265 per person. Only challenge is getting another Uber for the last mile connectivity.”
Another commenter echoed the sentiment, highlighting, “The problem is reaching home after getting down from bus..my home is 1 km from drop point..walking at that hour is dangerous.” “FD todna padega bhai,” quipped the third, encapsulating the collective exasperation.

Notably, although Bengaluru boasts the Vayu Vajra (bus) service as a lifeline from airports and temporary metro services, the latter bow out by 11 p.m., leaving commuters grappling with fewer alternatives.
