Saas-bahu Duo From Jharkhand’s Bokaro Sets Up Appam Stall In Car
Pushpa said her daughter-in-law Nidhi is a homemaker, who is currently preparing for her nursing exam.

Stories of conflict between daughter-in-laws and mother-in-laws are common. One saas-bahu duo has proved this wrong though. They stand out as the most iconic saas-bahu in Sector 4 of Bokaro, Jharkhand. They earn a living by serving South Indian food. Their appam is especially loved by locals. What is unique is that the woman and her mother-in-law operate an appam stall from their car. The mother-in-law named Pushpa Verma shared with Local 18 that she has been selling appam in Sector 4 for the past one month. The inspiration to make this dish came to her from her daughter Swati’s in-laws’ place, where she tasted appam for the first time. She then decided to set up a stall; now, she sells it with the help of her daughter-in-law Nidhi and son Ujjwal.

Pushpa said her son Ujjwal is employed in a private telecom company, while her daughter-in-law Nidhi is a homemaker, who is currently preparing for her nursing exam. Both Ujjwal and Nidhi spend their free time helping her in the stall.

Pushpa explained that the process of making appam starts with preparing a batter from a mix of semolina, curd and salt. Green vegetables such as carrots, capsicum, curry leaves and finely chopped onions are added to this batter. After this, curry leaves and mustard seeds are tempered in hot oil and then mixed into the batter. Once prepared in a tray, the appam is served to customers garnished with almonds and accompanied by green chutney.

Nidhi shared that they are offering half a plate of appam, including 6 pieces, for Rs 30; while a full plate, containing 10 pieces, is priced at Rs 50. She said they sell appam daily from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On an average, they sell 200 pieces of appam every day, resulting in a daily income of Rs 1,500. Their family’s aspiration is to eventually set up their special stall so that even more people can enjoy their delicious offerings. One customer named Gunja, who came to enjoy the appam, commented that it was very tasty and felt like home-cooked food.
