Organic food has garnered ample interest among health and environmentally-conscious consumers for its higher nutritious value and eco-friendly impact. Typically, organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As a result, they are believed to be more nutritious compared to conventionally grown food. Satyajit Hange, Farmer and Co-Founder, Two Brothers Organic Farms discusses the nutritional benefits accompanying organic food to understand what makes it better.
More antioxidant levels in produce
Using organic farming practices has shown a little to moderate rise in nutritional content in organically grown food. For instance, they may have a higher percentage of certain types of flavonoids and antioxidants. High antioxidant levels help protect against cell damage, neutralize free radicals, and lower the risk of chronic illnesses.
Less cancer-causing agents
Organically produced food has lower pesticide residue levels than produce grown using conventional techniques. A study by Friends of the Earth found that switching to an organic diet decreased the presence of cancer-causing glyphosates, the primary ingredient in pesticides, by 70% in the participant’s body in a week.
Rich Omega-3 fatty acid content
Organic feeding components like grass and fodder for livestock usually raise omega-3 fatty acid levels. Notably, omega-3 fatty acids are found in organic dairy, meats, and eggs and are more heart-friendly compared to other fats. They help control blood tension, reduce the chances of stroke and cardiac arrest, and help improve eyesight and brain health.
High levels of soil nutrients
Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers, which lowers the chances of triggering health problems. Cadmium, a toxic chemical in soil, is found in lower levels in organic fruits and vegetables than in crops grown using conventional farming techniques. This decrease could also be due to the ban on synthetic fertilizers in organic farming.
In addition to these, organic farming is beneficial for the environment. Organic and sustainable farming practices can help lower pollution and soil erosion, boost soil health and fertility by increasing its nutrient content, and, in turn, offer consumers highly nutritious produce.
