India’s largest refiner and fuel retailer Indian Oil Corporation aspires to join global superbrands in supplying fuel for the Formula One Championships according to reports and awaits Formula 1 fuel certification.
IOC anticipates the go-ahead for the supply of high-octane petrol, per the regulations of the F1 controlling body FIA, in three months.
Chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya explained that F1 petrol has an octane number greater than 95 and manufacturers in the cash-rich event opt for varying specifications depending on their requirements.
Vaidya added that the company plans to manufacture F1 fuel at its newest refinery at Paradip in Odisha citing its location which permits ease of access to export routes.
Formula One sides currently use E10 fuel with a 10 per cent bio-ethanol blend and the championships plan to shift to 100 per cent sustainable fuel, sourced from either non-food-bio-derived, genuine municipal waste or from sustainable carbon capture
IOC entered the racing fuels segment with its high-octane ‘STORM’ fuel for motorcycle racing.
The 2024 season of Formula One got underway recently with the Bahrain Grand Prix, which three-time reigning champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing claimed with a dominant performance as he led from pole to the chequered flag.
His teammate Sergio Perez completed a 1-2 for Red Bull, who also claimed the manufacturer’s title as they managed to top 21 races out of the 22 that took place in the previous campaign.
Carlos Sainz completed the podium at Bahrain ahead of Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth.
