What Is Abrosexuality? A Fluid Identity That Is Gaining The Internet’s Attention
Despite it gaining attention online, abrosexuality remains an unknown concept for many.

The term ‘abrosexuality’ is rapidly gaining attention online, offering a fresh concept among known sexual identities. This term has been described as a fluid experience of sexual attraction that can change over time. Emma Flint, a 30-year-old woman from the UK has shared her journey of accepting her identity as an abrosexual. In an interview, Flint recounted the mixed reactions she faced after coming out as abrosexual, including doubts about the validity of the label.

“When did you decide this? Is this even a label? I’ve never heard of it. I support you, obviously, but this doesn’t sound real” were some of the common reactions she received as per her interview with Metro news. Flint’s discovery of the term came through a post by Zoe Stoller, a US-based creator, educator and social worker who advocates for the LGBTQ+ community.

“It was only when I was reading the Instagram page of Zoe Stoller, a US based content creator, educator and social worker, who seeks to improve the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, that I saw the term abrosexuality for the first time. You know in cartoons when a lightbulb appears above their heads? That’s how it felt when I read their post. Finally, I feel seen,” Flint told Metro.

Flint’s experience is part of a broader trend of individuals sharing their stories of coming out as abrosexual online. Recently, TikTok has become a platform where many abrosexuals are sharing their challenges related to this fluid sexual identity. Many share that it is frustrating to share their varied preferences over time, while some also said there is no awareness related to the term.

What Is Abrosexuality?

In an interview to Buzzfeed, Stoller shed light on the concept of abrosexuality, describing it as a fluid sexual identity, meaning it shifts and changes over time.

“Some abrosexual people might identify with different sexuality labels at different times — for example, some days they might use the label pansexual, whereas other days they might use the label lesbian. Other abrosexual people might just use the label abrosexual. This label can be thought of as the sexuality version of the gender identity label genderfluid (describing a gender that shifts and changes),” Stoller explained.

Despite it gaining attention online, abrosexuality remains an unknown concept for many, according to Stoller. The person highlighted this gap, mentioning that even autocorrect on devices changes ‘abrosexuality’ to ‘bisexuality.’ “If the word isn’t read as ‘real’ by my computer’s dictionary, then there’s definitely a lack of widespread education about this label,” Stoller said.

The content creator further pointed out that while many identities exist in the LGBTQ+ spectrum, only a few are commonly discussed, leaving abrosexuality often misunderstood.

What Are Examples Of Abrosexuality?

According to Healthshots, there are several ways a person might express their abrosexual orientation through. However, there is no set way that abrosexual people can be:

  • An abrosexual person might experience daily changes in sexual attraction. On one day, they might be attracted to men while sometimes they might be drawn to women.
  • They might feel attracted to multiple genders at the same time, only to later develop a preference for one gender.
  • Occasionally, an abrosexual person might not experience sexual attraction towards anyone, regardless of gender.
  • A person who identifies as heterosexual might find themselves developing feelings for the same gender over time.
