Even though Britney Spears has time and again clarified she has no feud with Selena Gomez, fans choose to believe otherwise. The Baby One More Time hitmaker is currently on cloud nine over the success of her recently released memoir The Woman In Me. Following suit, Britney Spears also announced on Instagram about writing a new song. But Selenators seem to have a problem with the title of the track. In the announcement, Britney describes the name of the song to be “Hate You To Like Me” and fans were quick to draw its comparison with Selena’s hit breakup anthem “Lose You To Love Me.”
Soon after the announcement, a report by Page Six shed light on some of the tweets that indicate social media users believe Britney Spears is throwing shade at Selena Gomez.

Some agree there’s something fishy going on between the singers but many claim it’s a clash made-up by their respective fan bases. A user commented, “Britney has been shading Selena for over a year now. She finds all sorts of creative ways to do it. Creeper.” Another agreed, “It was a low blow to Selena who probably tried to help her.” But one fan dismissed the claim, “People always assume it’s about Selena when there’s no beef between them, just fans making up s*** like always.” Meanwhile, a fan reminded, “Britney and Selena are friends, let’s remember that Britney invited her to her wedding.” Britney clarifies “No beef with anyone”
It seems the Toxic singer already had an inclination to the negative reaction she might receive to the song’s title. Hence, she clarified that the moniker represents “no beef with anyone” at the time of announcing on social media. “I wrote a new song! Hate you to like me! No beef with anyone, just being a narcissist in a claimed, self-entitled way! It’s to accumulate interest by giving ego with my eyes closed because I hear important people do that these days,” she wrote on Instagram.

The animosity between the fandoms dates back to the time when Britney seemingly called Selena a “hypocrite” after the latter’s 2016 speech at the American Music Awards. “I don’t wanna see your bodies on Instagram. I wanna see what’s in here. I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore,” said Selena while accepting her award.
Later, Britney without taking names wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post, “Don’t you just love the nerve of women who stand firmly getting awards and speak on their beliefs about not showing their bodies on Instagram.” The musician also seemingly referenced Selena’s collaboration with BLACKPINK for the music video of Ice Cream. “(These) women are the very ones who get 4 million dollar budget videos made about sucking and licking on homemade ice cream,” Britney continued.
After facing backlash, Britney Spears shared yet another lengthy note on Instagram dismissing the idea of any beef with her. She clarified her “hypocrite” comment wasn’t directed at Selena adding she hadn’t even seen the music video of Ice Cream when she wrote about the double standard post.
