Perform wudu before touching the Qur'an. This is also known as ablution; it is an act of worship that is done to purify oneself from minor impurities. You wash the face, arms, head, and feet, as well as other parts explained in the linked article.

Alternatively, perform ghusl. Ghusl, which is also known as the greater ablution, is similar to a shower or bath, and purifies the body from major impurities. It becomes obligatory after, for example, sexual intercourse or menstrual bleeding. During ghusl, you wash the entire body, including the private parts, the lower body, the arms, and other parts mentioned in the linked article. You are not allowed to touch the Qur'an without wudu or ghusl.

Use miswak or brush your teeth before reading. As you are going to be reciting from the holy book of Allah(SWT), you must make sure your mouth is free from bad odors, such as those that come from strong, foul-smelling foods, like garlic. Until the smell is gone, you should not read the Qur'an.

Say the Ta'awudh and Tasmiya before reciting. You must seek refuge in Allah and start with Allah's name before reading the Qur'an, especially since it helps protect you from Shaitan (Iblis). Ta'awudh: A-oo-dhu bill-laa-hi mi-nash-shay-taan nirr-ra-jeem (I seek refuge in Allah from Shaitan, the rejected) Tasmiya: Biss-mill-lah Hirr-rah-maan Nirr-ra-heem (In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful)

Do not interrupt the recital. It is disliked to recite the Qu'ran, then stop and speak about worldly matters or in a language other than that of the Qur'an (i.e. you must not chat). Try to read alone without any distractions, but if you must say something, then close the Qur'an and say what must be said - then, before carrying on, recite the tasmiya again, wherever you are reading from.

Learn and understand what you are reading. This will make it easier for you to feel the power of the Qur'an - try to purchase a Qur'an that has translation alongside it. Learn about the numerous stories recounted in the Qur'an, and heed and benefit from their example.

Recite properly. If you do not know how to read the Qur'an, learn through sessions at a mosque or online. Try to read every letter properly, so as to not change the meaning. Pronounce every word correctly as well. For example the word Qalb means heart. If it is pronounced as Kalb, the meaning changes of that to dog. Another clear example is Qul and Kul. The first one means to say, and the second one to eat.

Follow etiquette when placing the Qur'an, while reading or while not. The Qur'an should be on a Qu'ran holder or on a table, but never the floor, near the feet, or anything that is dirty and absurd. When placing the Qur'an on a shelf or cupboard, other books must not be on top of it, whether they are Islamic books or not - the Qur'an should be at the top. The place where it is kept shouldn't be lower than a chair or bed. The area should be clean and completely free of dust and any other unhygienic environments.
