How to Upgrade Energy Cells in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you can obtain an Energy Cell. This acts as a battery and powers any Zonai devices you may encounter along the way. As you upgrade the Energy Cell, you can use Zonai devices much longer. You'll just need Crystalized Shards to do so. This wikiHow will show you how to upgrade Energy Cells in Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch.
Things You Should Know
  • Visit a Crystal Refinery and exchange 100 Crystallized Charges for one extra Energy Cell charge. You'll need 4,500 total for max battery.
  • Find Crystallized Charges in the Depths by defeating enemies and opening chests.
  • You can also trade 3 Zonaite Ore for 1 Crystallized Charge at any Forge Construct.

Upgrading Energy Cells

Visit a Forge Construct. The first Forge Construct you encounter is located on the Great Sky Island, within the Mining Cave. You should see a table with Crystallized Charges. A Forge Construct is where you can trade Zonaite Ore in exchange for Crystallized Charges.

Exchange Zonaite Ore for Crystallized Charges. It will take 3 Zonaite Ore to receive 1 Crystallized Charge. You must have at least 100 Crystallized Shards to upgrade your Energy Cell. You can also find Crystallized Charges by defeating boss monsters and opening chests in the Depths.

Visit a Crystal Refinery. You can also find a Crystal Refinery on the Great Sky Island, next to Nachoyah Shrine. This will be marked with a battery icon. A Crystal Refinery is where you can trade Crystallized Charges for Energy Cell charges.

Exchange 100 Crystallized Charges for one extra charge. Keep in mind that three charges make one Energy Cell, so you'll need to exchange 300 Crystallized Charges to upgrade your Energy Cell permanently by one. For max battery, you'll need 4,500 Crystallized Charges. You can also temporarily increase your Energy Cells by using Zonai Charges. These are obtained by defeating Construct enemies or by interacting with some inactive Constructs. A regular Zonai Charge can restore or increase your Energy Cells by one bar, whereas a Large Zonai Charge allows your Energy Cells' power to decrease much more slowly for a limited time.

Finding Crystallized Charges

Open chests in the Depths. The Depths is the underground area that lies beneath the surface area. You can enter the Depths by gliding through Gloom-infected entrances from the surface. Many chests give Crystallized Charges when opened.

Defeat enemies in the Depths. The Depths have various Gloom-infected bosses and enemies. Defeating them can earn you from 20 to 100 Crystallized Charges at a time. Always be sure to save your game before taking on any difficult bosses.

Trade Zonaite Ore. Zonaite Ore can be obtained by destroying the black and teal mineral rocks near Zonaite ruins. You can trade 3 Zonaite Ore for 1 Crystallized Charge.

Getting the Energy Cell

Complete the In-isa Shrine. This is the second Shrine during the game's tutorial on the Great Sky Island. Once the Shrine is completed, you'll obtain the Fuse ability along with the Energy Cell. The Fuse ability can even fuse items to your shield for more damage to opponents, but be sure to separate them when shield surfing.
