- The "Chasing Legends" Special Research could only be started during the Go Tour: Hoenn event, but doesn't expire and can be completed at any time.
- Gulpin, Surskit, or Cacnea can be found in the wild as well, so the choice you make won't lock you out of the others.
- Select a Pokémon based on which one you like best or which Pokémon types you want on your roster.
Which Pokémon to Get
Selecting the best Pokémon from the list depends on a few factors. While Gulpin, Surskit, and Cacnea differ in their base stats and move types, selecting the "best" one depends on some factors that might change from person-to-person. Choose the Pokémon you like the best. No matter which Pokémon you pick, you'll still be able to find the other two in the wild, in eggs, and in Raid Battles. The choice you make for the special research will simply result in you getting more candies for that particular choice more quickly. Check to see if you need a particular type. If you don't have many Pokémon or moves of a particular type, this could influence your decision. Swalot is Poison type but knows Bug, Fighting, Ground, Poison, and Ice type moves. Cacturne is Grass and Dark type but knows Poison, Dark, Fighting, and Grass moves. Masquerain is Bug and Flying type but knows Bug, Flying, Water, and Ghost type moves. Select a Pokémon based on their stats. If you need a Pokémon with stamina, consider picking Gulpin, as Swalot prioritizes the stamina stat. If you need a Pokémon with attack, consider picking Cacnea, as Cacturne prioritizes the attack stat. If you need a balanced Pokémon, consider picking Surskit, as Masquerain has a relatively even balance of base stats.
The best choice is one that fits your needs. Neither Gulpin, Cacnea, nor Surskit have a huge advantage over the other choices, so selecting the one you like best or that fits your current roster better will be the best choice.

Research Step Differences
Step 1. The first step involves selecting Gulpin, Cacnea, or Surskit. Your choice will influence the next step, as that Pokémon will appear in encounters.
Step 2. The game will ask you to catch 5 Gulpin, Cacnea, or Surskit. The Pokémon you have to catch will be the same one as your initial choice.
Steps 3 through 6 are the same regardless of your choice. The Pokémon you selected at the start of the special research doesn't change any part of these steps, though they have been altered slightly so users can complete the special research now that the Go Tour: Hoenn event is over.
Getting "Chasing Legends" Special Research
You could only get the "Chasing Legends" special research during Go Tour: Hoenn. The Go Tour: Hoenn event was held in Pokémon GO from February 18th to 26th, 2023. If you unlocked the "Chasing Legends" Special Research during the event but did not finish it, you are still able to complete it even though the event is over. Even if you didn't start the special research during the event, you can still get Gulpin, Cacnea, and Surskit from the wild, eggs, or Raid Battles.
