BANGALORE: Home Minister, R Ashok, called upon the police personnel to interact more with the public, which will shelve the fear of public about police.Speaking after the release of the booklet "101 things You Wanted to Know About the Police, But Were too Afraid to Ask" at an event held in the city on Friday. Stressing on the need of police to be people friendly, he said that the booklet was more useful for police personnel, though it is actually meant for public. "People friendly police are the need of the hour to build a healthy society. Police should understand that they cannot control communal clashes only through canes and muscle power. They have to meet the leaders of all religions to prevent such incidents. It is possible only if they are people friendly," he said."There is also a feeling among the police personnel that public should fear them. But, police should understand that they are working for public. It is criminals who should fear police, not a common man," he added.Justice, M N Venkatachalaiah, the former chief justice of the Supreme Court, after releasing the booklet, opined that if the SP and DC of a district work hard the society can witness a great change. "The image of the police is very important. The higher ups in the police department should motivate their subordinates to work better," he said. Commenting on the recent political developments, he said that when various lobbies like mining and liquor are having a say in the government, what development could be expected.Majaa Daruwala, the director of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, said that the booklet was also printed in Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam and other languages.
