Many non-vegetarians enjoy eating meat and eggs only, others love seafood, especially fish. If you are a fish lover, then you would know the importance of buying it fresh. Vendors often try to cheat by selling stale fish. The coastal areas of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu offer a wide variety of fish. The fishing industry here is flourishing due to the high demand for fish and its extensive supply. Everyone prefers to buy freshly caught fish. Many traders and vendors try to cheat the public by putting the fish on the ice, making it difficult to judge if the fish is fresh or was caught two days ago. This leaves many frustrated. Don’t worry, we have got you covered. If you want to know a few tricks to know if the fish is fresh or not, then here are a few tips shared by the food safety department to make your life a bit easier.
They suggest holding the fish in your palm and pressing it with your fingers. If it forms a dent and returns to normal after pressing, then your fish is fresh and good.
Another way of identifying a fresh fish is by checking its gills. A fresh fish’s gills will be red in colour. But a few vendors trick their customers by adding kumkum to make it look red. So, touch the gills and rub. Buy only after you have ascertained that there is no kumkum in there.
The officials further suggested that the fish that is caught on the same day and sold is generally shiny. Look out for fishes that have no lustre and look white-ish around the eyes. It means it is old.
