The large painting on the left catches the eye immediately for its sheer size - about six by five feet. Titled ‘The Detached Part of Inventiveness’, it shows a man bowing down, the top of his head prominent. This painting by city-based artist E H Pushkin is one of the 43 put up at the Suryakanti Art Gallery in Vazhuthacaud for its 13th Annual Exhibition of Paintings, which began on August 16.
The paintings exhibited include not only those by artists from Kerala but from outside the State as well. A water-colour painting by Kolkata-born artist Indrapramit Roy is one. Painted on hand-made paper, it depicts a cityscape in grey.
Karnataka-based Guru Siddappa’s painting of a woman among the stars, where she seems to be designing the night sky through her ‘rangoli’ pattern, is another work which has been displayed.
“We hold these exhibitions every year but the point to note about them is that we have paintings by established artists from all over India like Arpana Caur, Indrapramit Roy and Radhakrishnan K S,” said artist B D Dethan, who is also on the board of trustees of Suryakanti Gallery. “Some of the paintings like those by Aziz T M, Arpana Caur and some others have already been in our gallery but others have been brought in just recently.”
Among the new ones include a pair of acrylic on canvas abstract works by Achutan Kandallur, which stand out because the texture on the surface is visibly rough, whereas the other paintings have a smooth surface.
B D Dethan has also put up two paintings from his latest series, titled ‘Avastha’, one of which depicts several medicine pills below a human foot and the other shows a pair of hands tied together with a newly-hatched chick next to them.
“I wanted to show the utter helplessness that a person faces from time to time no matter how strong or smart he is,” said Dethan. “But really it is impossible to explain art in words - it is all in the viewer’s perception ultimately.”
Most of the works are acrylic on canvas but there also quite a few oil paintings. These apart, other mediums used include charcoal as seen in a work titled ‘Kathakali’ by artist Namboothiri; pencil and pastel; and ink and water colour. An ‘Orthic painting’ - a glass painting style employed by Kaladharan T - is also on display.
The price of the paintings put up range from ` 10,000 to ` 4 lakh.
The sole sculpture displayed is a bronze work by Delhi-based Malayali artist Radhakrishnan K S, which depicts people being swept away by a tornado, and is priced at ` 4.5 lakh.
The exhibition open till August 31 every day between 11 am and 6 pm.
