HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has proposed to set up a construction and demolition (C&D) yard to deal with debris and construction waste material being generated due to construction activities. The civic body has already identified a land quarry site of 10 to 12 acres for this purpose which it is planning to take possession duly contacting the Hyderabad district collector. The consultant Ms IL&FS Environmental Infrastructure and Services Limited have submitted a detailed concept note to the GHMC suggesting a mechanism for clearing of debris. The GHMC will invite Expression of Interest (EoI) for the C&D waste management after getting approval from the standing committee. The decision to have a C&D yard was taken as debris are being dumped at many places creating a shabby look on the roads. The GHMC is incurring `5 crore expenditure on debris removal drive through private agencies and by department vehicles.Recently, GHMC officials visited Delhi for studying the project of disposing of 500 TPD of C&D waste. The C&D waste is generated as a result of construction and demolition activities and building roads, flyovers, bridges and subways. It consists of silt, concrete, plaster, broken bricks and frequently mixed with Municipal Solid Waste making it unsuitable for composting or energy recovery.Besides, the C&D waste is strewn across places choking surface drains and disrupting traffic. In Delhi, it is found nearly 35 to 40 per cent of C&D waste was converted into useful products such as granular sub base (GSB), paving blocks, kerb stones and RMC and can be replicated in Hyderabad. The capital expenditure incurred on the project can be recovered by deriving value from processed C&D waste and processing charges from different agencies, said officials.
