THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has warned of an intense agitation against the UDF Government for attempting to scuttle the investigation into the ice cream parlour sex scandal and for ignoring the real issues in the lottery scam."By issuing notification in just 32 lottery cases, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy does not want to address the real issues of hawala money involved in the lottery scandal and the allegation raised by me that the lottery money was utilised for funding terrorist organisations,’’ Achuthanandan told reporters here on Sunday.Right from the beginning, the UDF Government had taken the wrong path and every step taken by the Oommen Chandy Government was to help the ministers who are facing various charges. P C Iype had been appointed as the Additional Advocate-General to scuttle the probe into ice cream parlour sex scandal. The Vigilance officers who were probing the cases against Adoor Prakash and M K Muneer, have been transferred."Now, lastly, the lottery scandal is also facing the same fate as Oommen Chandy wants to save P Chidambaram and Abhishek Singhvi,’’ said Achuthanandan. “If the government is not willing to rectify its mistakes, it will have to face severe agitation in the coming days both on the floor of the Assembly and outside,” warned the Opposition Leader in his first ever press conference convened at his official residence.“The decision by the UDF Government to issue notification on 32 lottery cases is nothing but an attempt to help the lottery mafia. The previous government had given ample evidence against the lottery mafia to the Centre. But they were not ready to order a CBI inquiry citing technical reasons. Even theSolicitor-General Gopala Subramaniam had admitted in the High Court that the letter from the Chief Minister was enough for ordering a CBI inquiry,” said VS.“Oommen Chandy, when he was the Opposition Leader, had alleged that my son Arun Kumar had tried to scuttle the probe against the lottery mafia. The Solicitor-General had accepted in the court that the Centre was ready to probe into these charges too. But now, the UDF Government should make it clear whether theyhave registered any FIR against Arun or this case has been included in the notification,” he said.Within 30 days of the UDF rule, the entire team probing the ice cream parlour sex scandal had been dismantled. All these are happening at a time when Oommen Chandy is propagating fight against corruption as the main agenda of his 100-days programme. The Opposition Leader also criticised the UDF Government for yielding to the pressure of self-financing college managements so that now all the seats in professional colleges have been taken over by the managements.
