Afghan President escapes Taliban gunfire
The gunfire took place during a military ceremony.

Kabul: Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai and other officials were forced to flee when a state ceremony came under heavy gunfire from Taliban fighters.

There was at least one casualty and 11 wounded two among them Aghan MPs, India's representative who was present at the ceremony, has condemned the attack.

President Hamid Karzai, ministers in his government as well as leaders of other political factions were forced to take cover. After Taliban militants opened fire at a ceremony in Kabul to mark the 16th anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from Soviet rule.

Although mortars and machine guns were fired in to the area Karzai escaped unhurt and was whisked away by his security team. He later appeared on state television and appealed for calm.

"Today, the enemies of Afghanistan, the enemies of Afghanistan's security and progress tried to disrupt the ceremony and cause disorder and terror. Fortunately, Afghanistan's military forces surrounded them quickly and arrested some of the suspects," he said.

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and it’s spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahed said that six of their fidayeens had entered the stadium and three of them were killed. This is another escape for President Karzai who has been the target of several bids on his life in recent years.
