New Delhi: Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi on Monday claimed that all major problems in the much-criticised Athletes Village have been sorted out and a majority of the flats were ready to be occupied.
"People are now happy with whatever they have got. Over a 1000 people have come now and they are very happy. Most of the athletes are happy," Kalmadi said in New Delhi.
"Eighty per cent of the flats are fine. The sun is out and everything will be fine. All the athletes are happy," he said.
The Games Village was initially dubbed filthy by the visiting delegates and there was more criticism when the South African High Commissioner claimed that a snake was found in the one of the athletes' rooms.
But Kalmadi said all complaints have been addressed.
"We have done whatever that had to be done. Whatever problems were there earlier have been sorted out. I don't think they have seen a Games Village like this anywhere else. There is no more scope for improvement," Kalmadi said.
Asked why the cleaning up of the Village was left to just a week before the Games, Kalmadi said this was not OC's responsibility.
"Cleaning is not my job, it should have come clean to us when it was handed over. But everyone is happy now and there would be no further problems. We have some small issues but they will be sorted out," he said.
Kalmadi said the OC is meeting everyday and there are small transportation problems which are being sorted out.
"We have meeting of officers everyday. There was a meeting of Games management committee today. This is single largest body which will be meet everyday. People are very happy with the arrangements," he said.
"Almost all the people have entered (the village). I don't think there is any complaint. There is excellent facilities in the village. There are small problems relating to transportation that we are sorting out. Work is fine at the village and we need to concentrate on the operational part related to opening ceremony. We will be talking to all the chef-de-missions for this," he added.
Kalmadi admitted that some construction-related work is left and said it will take a day to be taken care of.
"The work is on and everything will be all right, all the finishing work is being done. There was some construction work left and we need at least a day to finish it and we are doing it," he said.
According to the OC, over 1000 athletes from more than 46 nations so far have arrived at the national capital.
Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit also inspected the village, along with chief secretary Rakesh Mehta in Delhi.
