Kurnool: While farmers all over the country are busy preparing their fields for monsoons, in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district people are searching the fields for diamonds. And this year the arrival of the monsoon was a harbinger of good luck for bus driver Ponnaiah, who came all the way from Prakasam and chanced upon the diamond after a long search.
Ponnaiah said, "Me and my brother had been searching for diamond. I have found one. We plan to sell it off and this will solve our problems. Now we are returning, but will come back again."
In this diamond rich mining area, the precious stones show up after the rains wash away several layers of the earth. Not just farmers but people from nearby districts shift base temporarily to these villages to try their chance. But not all are as lucky as Ponnaiah.
Goshiama who visits these fields every year went back empty handed once again. "Others have got in my village, I am still searching for diamond," Goshiama said.
The diamond hunt has also turned out to be a lucrative business for diamond merchants who purchase the best diamonds. However, many said that most of the stones found are just crystals and only a few chance upon real diamonds.
Noor Mohammad, a diamond dealer, said, "People find diamonds worth Rs 2,000, 3,000 or 10,000 and it can go upto lakhs. It has been reported last week someone got diamond worth Rs 17 lakh.
