CHENNAI: The State government has been granted two weeks' time by the Madras High Court to appoint chairman and member-secretary to the Private Schools Fee Determination Committee.
When a public interest writ petition from M Seshachalam of Panrutti in Cuddalore district came up on Friday, Advocate-General A Navaneethakrishnan told the First Bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam that the file was under process. He prayed for a week's time to enable him to inform the court on the appointment.Granting two weeks' time, the bench hoped and trusted that the government would issue the GO appointing the chairman and membersecretary to the committee. The bench adjourned the matter till August 19, for reporting compliance.

According to senior advocate P Wilson, originally Justice K Govindarajan was appointed as the chairman of the committee. When he resigned from the post in October, 2010, Justice K Raviraja Pandian was appointed to the post. He also tendered his resignation in June this year after fixing the fee structure. Since then, the posts of chairman, membersecretary and special officer were lying vacant, much to the chagrin of the students and their parents. In the absence of the persons to man the committee, the private schools, which have disagreed and went on appeal against the recommendations of Justice Raviraja Pandian committee, were collecting exorbitant fees. There was no authority in the committee to receive complaints from parents against the schools, which collected huge sums.
