Dehradun: At least three people were killed and a few others went missing after a cloudburst in the wee hours of Monday in a remote village in Uttarakhand. The incident happened in the ill-fated Jumma village in Pithoragarh district, some 600 kms from state capital Dehradun.

An official said the rescue teams have reached village and searching for survivors. The village is located on the banks of Kali River that flows from Nepal to India. The cloudburst occurred on the riverside affecting a sizeable chunk in Nepal as well.

“The State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) team has reached the village and are looking for the survivors in the debris,” Riddhim Agarwal, DIG, SDRF, told News18.

The three bodies were recovered by the villagers. Those killed are three girls aged between 9 and 15. Two teenage girls have been rescued while two others, including a man and a woman in their 40s, are still missing.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is keeping an eye on the developments and instructed officials to maintain a supply of ration, medicines and milk for children. The CM said he intends to fly to the village but bad weather conditions have allowed him to do so.

Visuals from the village shared with News18 suggest that there has been widespread damage in the bordering village following the cloudburst and incessant rains. Several houses have also been damaged in the sludge that spilled all over. The locals, meanwhile, have been making efforts to save those trapped in the debris.

The village falls under the Dharchula sub division. Several villages in this strategic important region have been cut off from the outer world since last one week. The back-to-back incidents of landslides after regular rains have made things worse for the locals and the administration.

Pithoragarh is one among the three districts of Uttarakhand that border along China and Nepal.
