Better-equipped control room for T'puram police
The new control room to begin functioning next month will have more surveillance cameras and speed detection radars.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: How can the fast-moving expansion activities fit into a 600-square feet space? The city police, realising this fact, have been engaged in the task of constructing a new control room. The City Police Control Room which is functioning on the first floor of the Cantonment police station building at present would get a new office by next month on the second floor of the same building. The new office is aimed at coping with the future expansion activities of the City Police. “The new office would have an area which is double that of the old one,” said Bijoy, Control Room Assistant Commissioner.   The construction of the new office, with an area of 2,600 square feet, is expected to be completed within one month.  The current space of the control room is too small to accommodate the equipment which the city police have been installing as part of their expansion activities. As many as 192 more surveillance cameras would be installed in various traffic spots in the city as the second phase of expansion of the city cops’ activities. This is apart from the existing 42 cameras which had been installed as part of the first phase.  In addition to these, the city cops are planning to install still more cameras as part of the third phase of expansion. Automatic speed detection radars have been installed at six spots on the Kovalam-Kollam route and it has been planned to install them in 26 more spots on the same stretch. “Considering the future expansion and installation of modern equipment, a new  control room is being built to meet the increased needs. When more equipment are installed, there needs a lot of space in the control room to set up monitors. Also, modern equipment are being installed there,” said Gopakumar S P, project manager, Keltron, in charge of carrying out the expansion plans.  However, the new control room would be expanded yet again in the next phase to keep pace with the future expansion plans.
