A 23-year-old techie drowned in a dam reservoir in Bhopal when he jumped into the water to save the pet dog of a friend on Wednesday morning. The dog, however, swam to safety, but the youth, Saral Nigam, who was a B.Tech graduate from NIT Bhopal, died. Nigam was an only child and was preparing for the UPSC exams after getting his engineering degree from MANIT.
Quoting investigation officer ASI Antram Yadav, a TOI report said Saral, along with his two female friends, had gone to Jungle Camp in the Kerwa Dam area for a morning walk around 7.30 am. One of the girls took her pet dog along.
Around an hour later at around 8:30 am, when the trio was walking alongside the water body, the dog accidentally fell into the water. The group of friends held each other’s hands and jumped into the water to save the dog.
While in the water, they lost their footing in the current and fell into the reservoir. The girls somehow managed to make it out of the water but Saral was swept into deeper waters by the strong current.
The girls then ran to the road and screamed for help. Upon hearing their screams, the watchman of Jungle Camp ran to the shore and informed Ratibad police.
Police rushed to the spot along with divers and SDERF to find no sign of Saral. His body was found an hour later. Police said he drowned in 10-15 feet of water. The body has been sent for autopsy and an investigation into the case is underway.
The girls were sent home by police. Their statements are yet to be recorded.
