Bihar Man Ran Away With Wife's Sister 17 Years Ago, Court's Unconventional Sentence Stunned All
The legal battle began when Narayan Mandal, a resident of the Sanokhar police station area, lodged a complaint against his son-in-law, Rajkumar.

In a surprising twist in Bihar’s Bhagalpur, a court has handed down an unusual punishment in a case that has been ongoing for 17 years. Rajkumar Mandal, who is accused of fleeing with his sister-in-law nearly two decades ago, was recently ordered by the Additional District Judge-16 court to plant 25 saplings and obtain a certificate from the local police station as his sentence. This unconventional ruling has caught many by surprise, marking a notable departure from traditional penalties such as imprisonment.

The Background of the Case

The incident began 17 years ago when Rajkumar became infatuated with his wife’s sister, Bulo Kumari. He pressured her to marry him and even threatened his father-in-law, Narayan Mandal, insisting that he would only keep his wife, Guho Devi, if Narayan agreed to arrange a marriage between Rajkumar and Bulo. In response, Narayan hastily arranged Bulo’s marriage to another suitor, which took place in 2007. Displeased by the turn of events, Rajkumar took drastic action and fled with the newly married Bulo Kumari on June 30, 2007.

Case Filed at Sanokhar Police Station

The legal battle began when Narayan Mandal, a resident of the Sanokhar police station area, lodged a complaint against his son-in-law, Rajkumar. Initially, the police station refused to register the case, prompting Narayan to approach the court. The court intervened, instructing the police to accept the case. Subsequently, Narayan filed a complaint against Rajkumar and his entire family. Following an investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet. In a surprising turn, the judge issued a unique order regarding the punishment, which left many astonished.

Court Orders Planting of 25 Saplings

Following the conclusion of the case, the ADJ 16 court handed down an unusual sentence to Rajkumar Mandal: he is required to plant 25 saplings. Additionally, Rajkumar must obtain a certificate from the local police station confirming the planting and submit it to the court. The next hearing is set for August 28.

This ruling has garnered widespread praise, with many seeing it as a positive step for environmental protection. Observers believe that the judge’s decision reflects a growing recognition of the importance of environmental conservation and could serve as a model for integrating ecological considerations into legal judgments.
