KOCHI: Rare are the occasions when creative minds from far-off places pursuing varied genres of art, using distinct mediums, come under one roof. 'Expressions', the art camp going on at Le Meridien is one such, where 10 known and upcoming artists from across the state and the country are working together for a week.  Palette People, a creative platform for art movements and Le Meridian Hotel groups, has jointly organised the camp which will conclude on Saturday.  Though there was no particular theme for the camp, it seems like the nature and its exploitation by the mindless humans is the recurrent theme in many works. For instance the works of Bindhi Rajagopal from Ernakulam carries a plethora of concerns. The paintings with motifs like blue ocean, leafless trees and the ever growing skylines point to the urgency of disaster management. Another painting, 'Death Second' by P G Anil with a crow pecking a ripe papaya fruit with its pointed beak focuses on the cycle of life, the correlation of life  and death. The primal fear of death is the theme of 'Living Souls' by K A Devadas from Ernakulam. The heart of darkness is well implicated with entwined creepers and screeching owls. His, 'Nature, love and rituals' with primitive tribal motifs such as peacock and hen connect the past with the present.Dhara Mehrotra from Delhi who says nature in its organic form inspires her, has pictured strands of grass seen on the hotel premises. She says the art scene of the state is as welcoming as the lush foliage here. Dhara says the art connoisseurs as well as the art lovers here are warm and empathetic. The 'lotus pool' of Kajal Charankatt has trees of life. In the work, she elaborates on the elegance of the lotus flower, which sprouts from mud. Wilfred's work of moonlit night has a subliminal quality. Falguni Bhatt from Kolkata who originally hails from Baroda has converged the culture of both Bengal and Gujarat through mixed medium in her work, 'Outer and inner space'. The picture of a tribal girl with innocent protruding eyes by K G Babu is especially striking. “Every child has an unaffected naivety, but will soon lose it, as the child grows up” the artist says.   Francis Xavier who has drawn 'Vayalchulli', a rare flower-like thorn with medicinal quality which grows in Wayanad says, “I simply tried to portray the beauty of the wild thorn.” The coracle used by the fisherfolk of Orissa and Bengal are reproduced by Prathapan from Bangalore. “The lives of the fisherfolk who had spend their life in water have relevance in the present day in which water is the buzzword,” says the artist. Mahesh Aravind, an art enthusiast, who is a staff of Le Meridien is also taking part in the camp with his work, 'Floating Island' .  Cyril P, the curator of Palette People, says artistic camps can contribute immensely to the growth of the art scene of Kerala, since convergence of ideas happens at such camps.
