Hours after resigning as a Calcutta High Court judge, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Tuesday said that he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier, citing personal reasons, he had sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu.
He sent the copies of his letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam, sources said.
Justice Gangopadhyay arrived at his chamber at the High Court earlier today, following which his resignation letter was sent.
At a press conference later in the day, Gangopadhyay addressed the speculations on his likely future plans in the political circuit and said that “he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party”.
“TMC will crumble down,” he said, adding that a couple more arrests are required, following which the party will not be able to stay.
He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that he is a “very good leader”.
However, he noted that he does not know whether or not he will contest in the elections. “That depends on the BJP,” the former Calcutta HC judge said.
Earlier, News18 spoke to Justice Gangopadhyay exclusively about his plans. The former Calcutta HC judge, known for his strong opposition against the Trinamool Congress, said that he resigned because he “realised my work here is done”.
Asked about what the leaders of the ruling-TMC say about him, Gangopadhyay said “Most of the ruling party members are half-learned, which is why they are saying so. What they say does not matter me at all. They are part of the ‘half-learned club’…”
Slamming the Mamata Banerjee-led party, he said that he slams corrupt people and if they are such people, “it’s not that they have made small mistakes”, he said, adding that “these were deliberate serious errors”.
WHAT GANGOPADHYAY SAID ABOUT BJP
Amid speculations of his political plans, Justice Gangopadhyay said that the “The BJP is better than the TMC and also than the Congress”.
“The TMC is obviously not a political party. They are a club. The Congress is a ‘family zamindar’ party. Compared to the TMC, the Congress and BJP fare better. However, the TMC is the worst party I have ever seen…” he added.
Earlier, when he was asked about whether he would join the BJP or Left, he had said, “Let them offer, then we will see. This is a hypothetical question. I can’t answer like this.”
Commenting on the nation’s political system, he termed it to be “mostly corrupt”. “When the ED raids their house, they start shouting that it happens because they are in the opposition…Have you seen the ED or CBI chasing CPM leaders? If there anybody in India who fights with the BJP that’s CPM, but there is no such case against them…” he added.
