Mumbai: PVR Pictures has acquired the Indian distribution rights of Cannes' best director winner 'Foxcatcher', the true-life inspired drama starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum in key roles.
Directed by Bennett Miller, who has previously directed Brad Pitt starrer 'Moneyball', the film is based on Olympic wrestling gold medalist Mark Schultz's book about the real-life murder of his brother, Olympic champion Dave Schultz.
Screened in the competition section, the film generated great reviews and won Miller the best director's trophy in Cannes last month.
"We are very happy that Bennett Miller won the best director award in Cannes. We have high hopes from the film as it has got huge Oscar potential. The film has a strong story, good script and a great starcast," Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Joint
MD, PVR Limited told PTI.
Sanjeev said they are looking at a probable November release of the film which will coincide with its North American date. "We try to keep our releases close to the North American theatrical date. For 'Foxcatcher', it looks like November. The release dates will be announced by the producers and then we will plan," he said, adding they have planned to release it in 50 to 60 screens in India.
Sanjeev said they source most of their films from festivals like Berlin, Cannes and American Film Market.
"The majority of the films that we acquire are from Hollywood but we also buy British films. We recently bought an amazing film from England, the untitled Lance Armstrong movie, which is directed by Stephen Frears, who was nominated for the best director for 'Philomena' at this year's Oscars," he said.
The other films that he is looking forward to this year are 'The Expendables 3' and Brad Pitt starrer World War II drama 'Fury' in October, which, he says, will have wide release in India.
PVR Pictures has also acquired the distribution rights to films like 'Our Kind of Traitor', 'Equals', 'Legend', 'Civilian', 'Inversion', 'American Express', 'Hologram for the King', 'London Fields' and 'Visions'.
