MADURAI: Senior police officers in the State have accused the police in West Bengal of acting with an ulterior motive in arresting an Inspector and three constables from Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The four policemen, who were on the trail of a gang involved in the burglary of Alukkas Jewellery showroom in Tirupur, were arrested by the Farakka police in West Bengal after Sheikh Bakul, a relative of one of the suspects, mysteriously drowned in a canal. The West Bengal police claimed that Inspector Selva Thangam and constables S Syed Babu, Karu Kannan and U M R Araba had allegedly beaten up Bakul and chased him out of a police station when he fell into the canal. A top Tamil Nadu police officer, however, described the arrests as a “planned attempt by the Farakka police to hamper investigation in the Alukkas Jewellery case.” Bakul, according to him, was a police informer.Alleging that the Farakka police were hand in glove with criminal gangs operating out of the border areas of Bangladesh, the senior officer told Express that “they booked our men under Section 304 IPC fearing that any further probe into the case will expose their nexus.” Only after senior police officers from the State had intervened, the charge against the Inspector and constables was altered to Section 304A (death due to negligence) and they were released on bail. A police officer involved in the operation said three police teams had camped in Farakka to nab the suspects. On March 4, Inspector Thangam had secured three of the accused and brought them to the Farakka police station in the evening.“Since, the Farakka Station Inspector Dallal was not present Thangam had requested the Sub-Inspector there to allow him to question the accused. But the latter refused claiming he needed to get permission from the Inspector. Dallal turned up at the station around 2 am on March 5 but refused to extend cooperation with the Tamil Nadu police. Only after DSP Rajaram spoke to Dallal he agreed to cooperate,” the officer said.
