CHENNAI: Property worth several lakh of rupees was gutted in an old tyre godown near Thirumullaivoyal, here on Wednesday.The blaze was contained by fire tenders only after three hours of rigorous efforts. Selvam of Murugappa Colony near Saraswathi Nagar ran a godown near a school and dealt in old tyres. Around 10.30 am, a fire broke out in the godown and residents in the neighbourhood alerted the fire station at Ambattur. A unit from Ambattur rushed to the spot to put off the fire and fire engines from Poonamallee, Ennore, Red Hills, and Koyambedu were called in as the fire was spreading fast.Divisional Fire Officer Meenakshi Vijay expedited the fire-tending process and local politicians, including K Balaraman and S M Nasser helped.As the intensity of fire was high, two hut dwellings in the neighbourhood were completely gutted. The fire was kept from spreading to the adjacent areas due to the swift action of the fire fighters. Several water tanks installed in the neighbourhood melted and the entire area was engulfed by the smoke until noon.Police said properties including old tyres worth several lakh were destroyed in the fire. A case had been registered at Thirumullaivoyal Police Station and preliminary investigations suggest that fire from a garbage pile could have spread into the tyre godown.Revenue officials were informed about the damage incurred to dwellings. Food packets were arranged for affected residents on Wednesday night. Sources said other relief measures will be provided on Thursday morning.
