KOCHI: Children in the city can enjoy watching movies and cartoons in a space they have been dreaming for a long time. The state-of-the-art Children’s Theatre at the Subhas Park will be opened at 4.30 pm on Monday. The echo-proof and sound-proof structure is the first automated theatre in the state. Over 5,000 students will attend the ceremony.It will also be an occasion to pay tributes to the late film director Mohan Raghavan who made T D Dasan Std VI B. The film will be screened from 6.30 on Monday evening after the inaugural ceremony, said District Collector Sheik Pareeth. The air-conditioned theatre built with German technology can accommodate 200 persons, he said.   Outstanding paintings done by children adorn its outer walls.  The imported projector can be connected to the net and help network the programmes being organised there. The projector costs `2.7 lakh and screen Rs 90,000.The theatre costs Rs 25 lakh.If any important programmes being held across the globe is to be screened here, they can be connected to the projector.  Students have to pay a membership fee to  watch films.The responsibility of running the theatre will be given to students. Students from different schools who are members of the Children’s Club will be trained and entrusted with the running of shows and programmes. Classes will be held by eminent persons to offer guidance on leadership. Students will take up the responsibility on a rotation basis.Films shows will be held every Saturday for children. Cartoons will also be screened. This will be done in collaboration with the Children’s Film Society.To garner revenue the theatre will be opened  to all on other days. Seminars and other programmes can be also be held. A renovated library, the work of which is almost over, would also be opened soon to encourage reading habits among children, he said.    The rooms for the games parlour are ready  but the equipment have to be set up. The district authorities, child welfare groups and Children’s Film Society have put their heads together to make the theatre a reality.  Children can eagerly look forward to the shows on Saturdays.
