BANGALORE: While concerns about the quality of research in higher education have been echoed by many, Presidency College has taken the initiative to foster healthy collaboration on the research front, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with La Trobe University, Australia. Unlike many other MoUs, this one will focus on research at student and faculty levels. “This agreement will mainly focus on research collaborations between the two institutions. It was signed after a year of syllabus mapping that involved comparing and contrasting our syllabus with that of La Trobe,” Presidency College principal and director Dr Muddu Vinay told Express. With this 5-year MoU, Presidency College will now have Undergraduate and Post-graduate students dividing time of study in Bangalore and Victoria. “To reduce cost, a student can now choose to study 2 years here and 1 year there, while paying fees for only 2 years of studying here,” explained Dr Vinay. “Our agreement with Bedfordshire is for student exchanges. But research is prominent and given first importance in our agreement with La Trobe,” he said Now, any faculty member from Presidency interested in a PhD degree can collaborate with La Trobe and vice-versa. Faculty from both institutions can visit each other for research purposes. Students, however, can collaborate with La Trobe faculty for their projects. “This agreement is not between institutions but between people, and it will work only if people work together with passion for education. La Trobe looks forward to a very long and fruitful relationship,” said Prof John Rosenberg, senior deputy vice-chancellor & vice-president of La Trobe University.
