THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An ardent foodie? Then the city has got a lot to offer. From ‘naadan’ fish curries to Mugalai biriyani, the delicacies, hallmark of various customs and cultures are just a stone’s throw away, ready to satiate the taste buds of food lovers. While most of them serve conventional delicacies, some are lining up unique dishes, thereby luring the food lovers to their fold.    A must visit eatery and a probable inclusion in foodies’ itinerary, Mubarak, a modest outlet situated beside a tiny alley in Chalai market, is known for its spicy fish curry and tapioca served along with rice. Many varieties of fish curry, including squid (‘kanava’), mackerel (‘ayala’), prawn,  tuna etc are served here. But the thorn in the flesh will be the crowd that anxiously beleaguer the already ‘engaged’ customers to grab vacant seats. The thirty-year-old hotel is still faithful to the repute it has gained for over a period of time, which was evident from the traffic congestion created in the tiny alley in Ruby Nagar by customers who thronged the hotel.Just opposite Ruby Nagar, on the other side of the road, a crowd was gathering in size in front of Hotel Rahmania Kethel’s Chicken. The 60-year-old hotel, now owned by M Maheen, has tender chicken as signature dish. A package of  five chapattis, along with eight pieces of fried tender chicken, chicken gravy, pickle and lemon juice, will cost around Rs 110. This renowned hotel operates on all days from 11.30 am to 10 pm.For the veggies, options are aplenty as the city now houses more than a dozen exclusive vegetarian hotels. Ramji Bhajanalayam, a Punjabi Dhaba located near Overbridge which serves North Indian delicacies, has got much takers, mostly techies from North India. Dishes like chilli gobi, palak paneer, paneer butter masala and butter milk are high on demand. Two aalu parattas and butter will leave you with a bill of Rs 50. The dhaba works from 8.30 am to 11 pm, with three hours’ break in the afternoon.Saurashtra Gujarath food, located near Parthas textiles, is a vegetarian hotel which serves only Gujarathi dishes. The most sought-after dish is ‘poori’ and ‘dal’ curry. A pack of three ‘poories’, two ‘pappads’, pickle, onion slices and dal curry is charged at Rs 27. This eatery stands unique as few hotels in the city offer authentic Gujarathi dishes.
