Opposition Congress in South Delhi Municipal Corporation has written to Election Commission accusing the ruling BJP councillors of violating the model code of conduct by using 'NaMo' caller tune on their mobiles.
"I have sent a formal complaint to Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath informing him about the use of 'Modi aane wala hai' caller tune by some of the BJP councillors. It is violation of the poll code," Leader of the Opposition in the BJP-led SDMC, Farhad Suri said on Friday.
Suri alleged that the use of such caller tunes in their mobiles essentially amounted to "misuse" of public money for "party promotions".
"As councillors, we are given a SIM card and Rs 1,500 for mobile phone expenses from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Now, if one starts using that to promote a particular party then doesn't it amount to a violation of the code?
"And, the funny explanation the ruling members of the House are giving is that they will pay Rs 40 per month for the tune. Why didn't they put such provisions before the MCC came into force? Because, it is a mere afterthought by the ruling BJP after I raised the issue in the House," Suri claimed.
