KOCHI: Having identified that a ‘waste to energy’ plant will solve the garbage disposal-related issues in the city, the Kochi Corporation is mooting the idea of setting up such a facility at Brahmapuram. It will be designed to treat plastic waste to generate crude oil.A team consisting of the Mayors of Kochi, Kollam and Thrissur Corporations recently visited the solid waste treatment plant at the Pimpri-Chinchwad twin towns in Pune.Mayor Tony Chammany, who reached the city the other day after his visit to Pune and New Delhi, told Express that the ‘waste to energy’ plant at Pimpri-Chinchwad, which uses the technology to convert plastic waste and thermocol into crude oil, is one of the best options that can be considered for Kochi. “We will give the feedback of our visit to the CM. The state govt has to take a final decision on the technology and mode of implementation of the plant,” Chammany said. The team also had visited the Timarpur-Okhla Municipal Solid Waste Management Plant, which is a private-public partnership project of the Jindal ITF Ecoplis and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The Mayor said that in the Delhi plant, electricity is being generated out of waste. “These options can be considered for Kochi as the government has already approved the proposal for setting up a solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram,” he added.
